A distressed pet owner has been joyfully reunited with her treasured dog after he was discovered trapped in a rabbit hole five days after going missing. Sarah Mclellan, 33, was heartbroken when her beloved dog Ralph went missing during a walk near their home in Haworth, West Yorkshire. Despite their efforts over the weekend to find the wire-haired Dachshund with the help of volunteers and social media posts, they had no success. The worry and fear escalated as they imagined the worst scenarios. Thankfully, Ralph was found by his sister Edie during a walk with Mclellan’s husband on Monday, five feet underground in a maze of rabbit burrows near their home. After two hours of digging, they successfully rescued the terrified pup.
“The rabbit holes are like intricate mazes, and it seems he must have wandered into one and gotten stuck – creating his own little exit hole but unable to escape,” said Mclellan. “When he finally emerged, he took a quick bathroom break and then resumed his usual antics as if nothing had happened!
“I returned home and, to my surprise, found him in the kitchen,” she continued. “I was in complete shock.”
Despite shedding some weight during his ordeal, Ralph luckily didn’t suffer any major injuries.
“Ralph is completely exhausted and his nails are worn down from trying to dig himself out, but thankfully he’s doing okay,” Mclellan shared. “He’s lost a bit of weight and is just really tired – he just needs some time to recover and get back to his usual self.”
The owner, feeling relieved, is hopeful that her happy reunion with her pet will inspire others to remain hopeful in finding their lost pets as well. She described the dramatic experience of finding her dog, staying up late just to cuddle him after the ordeal. She mentioned that her dog enjoys chasing rabbits, which led to his disappearance, but she hopes he has learned his lesson.
